Caroline has always been a sports fan – like the rest of her family. Her parents, Piotr and Anna Wozniacki, have both been professional athletes. Anna played volleyball for Poland, and Piotr can look back on a career as professional soccer player. The Polish couple moved to Denmark in the late 80s when Piotr went to play for the Danish soccer club B1909 in Odense. After a couple of years in Denmark, Caroline was born, on July 11, 1990.
Already from the age of two, Caroline and her brother Patrik (four years older than Caroline) participated in a lot physical activities, and they were taught how to swim at a young age. As her elder brother started playing soccer, Caroline wanted to play the game as well. And as he took up tennis, she followed closely in his footsteps and instantly fell in love with the sport. Caroline could be seen playing tennis for hours with her dad at the tennis club in their home town Koge. She didn’t seem to be able to get enough of the game, constantly pushing her dad to play yet another match with her.
The hard training quickly paid off. Nine-year old Caroline started to win the matches against the rest of her family. When she won the singles title in the Osaka Mayor’s Cup in Japan at 14 years of age in October 2004, it was clear that she had the potential to achieve great results as a tennis player. Since then, she has won quite a few titles, including the Junior Championships in Wimbledon in 2006.
Since then, Caroline officially turned pro and has won six Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Singles Titles including the Japan Open, New Haven and Stockholm in 2008 and in 2009 she has won the Ponte Vedra Beach, Eastbourne and New Haven titles. At the 2009 US Open, Caroline made her debut Grand Slam singles appearance in the quarterfinals, semifinals and final before falling to former Sony Ericsson WTA World #1 Kim Clijsters. After her tremendous US Open, Caroline officially qualified for the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships set to take place in Doha in November which comprises of the top eight players in the world, and went all the way to the semifinals. En route to the semifinals, she beat two top ranked oppenents (Zvonareva and Azarenka) in two dramatic three-setters.
In addition to this, Caroline was named and awarded the 2008 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Newcomer of the Year presented at the 2009 Sony Ericsson Open, and is the youngest singles player ranked in the top 10 in the world.
Caroline started off the 2010 season well; she advanced to the 4th round of the Australian Open, before falling to Chinese Na Li. Caroline the proceeded to the finals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Despite her loss in the finals, she climbed to a career-high #2 ranking. After her great run in Indian Wells, she defended her title on the green clay of Ponte Vedra, claiming her 7th career title.

The US Open so far has been very surprising. Especially the women’s side of it. Yanina Wickmayer in the semi’s, Kim Clijsters making a strong come back, Caroline Wozniacki finally made her long awaited breakthrough and the big surprise of the tournament is ofcourse Melanie Oudin. Oudin taught a lot of players some Russian. Steam course too.

Other remarkable things that happened during the tournament was the guy who kissed Rafael Nadal. We had streakers at Wimbledon and many more wacky things. But a guy kissing another guy on court. Yah that was baffling. Even though he made a lot of fans jealous, the kiss man is going to be charged for what he did. But what a stunt. I wonder how he got past security. That’s something the US Open will have to work on. But then again, it’s these kind of events that gives a tournament that little extra sensation.
